Peer support for people living with HIV

Published on:

Living with HIV is easier when you can talk to people who understand. Peer support puts you in touch with others who live with HIV, in confidence and without judgement.

Introduction

Peer supporters are people living with HIV who have been trained to help. They know what it can feel like to hear a diagnosis, to start treatment or to tell someone close to you.

You can use peer support at any stage, whether you were diagnosed this week or many years ago.

What peer support can offer

  • A chance to talk to someone who has been through something similar
  • Practical tips about treatment, appointments and everyday life
  • Information about groups and activities near you
  • Help with telling partners, friends or family, if you want to

How to find support

Ask any member of the team at your clinic about peer support. We can introduce you to a peer supporter, or tell you about local and online groups. You can bring a friend with you for your first meeting.

Your privacy

What you share with a peer supporter is private. You choose how much to say, and you can stop at any time.

You do not have to go through it alone. Ask your clinic team how to take the first step.
